Department of Cognitive Science, Bandung Fe Institute, founded on 1 August 2003, was from initiative of some researchers in Bandung Fe Institute who at the time was focusing research on mining sites, fuel, social contract, and econophysics. The department was originally designed for the purpose of bridging the gap among certain related levels in social science: between mental and physical entities (infamously known as mind-body problem); and between individual and collective aspects of human life. And it grows.
After so long, three remain to be the most popular: behavioral economics (consumer behavior, market behavior) with findings from cognitive psychology as its background; automated cognition (machine translation and various automation programs) that gains a lot of support from artificial intelligence, logic and the philosophy of mind; and folk theory (educational issues, social conflict) with full support of contemporary advancement in developmental psychology, ethnobiology and anthropology.
The department also has a small e-learning-based pedagogical activities for public, beside in-house public lectures once in a while.
In this site, you can find information about the researchers, ongoing research programs, publications, and some other materials related to cognitive science.
Some say that cognitive science is some kind of panoply all endeavors towards understanding consciousness, cognition, mind, thought, memory, perception, and the sort should well reside.
It is widely accepted too, that cognitive sciences are very rich quests, involving different pieces of our scientific knowledge, sometimes counterintuitively unrelated, not only surprisingly supportive but also wildly abrupt to each other. Cognitive sciences are debates.
Hence the keyword: 'interdisciplinary'. In other words, there is hardly any room for tightly segmented special sciences regardless the fact that the main object to be observed is often just the same.
And for the same reason, Bandung Fe Institute as one of research institution dealing much with the so called complex system is able to manage a cognitive science department since 1 August 2003.
Researchers come and go ever since. It is the interdisclinary thing that keeps researches not only continuing, but also tightly juxtaposed with other departments in the Bandung Fe Institute, namely, Department of Computational Sociology and Department of Dynamical System Modeling. |
